We are currently developing biopolymer based filtration units
for removing micronutrients and phosphate from wastewater
generated by agricultural processes enabling the recovery
and the reuse of the water.

The biopolymer and bio-filters are composed of columns
containing chitosan composites.

The choice of chitosan beads as column materials is based
on previous studies indicating that chitosan, a biopolymer
generated from shellfish, can reversibly remove the micronutrients
in greenhouse waste.

In addition, chitosan beads can be converted to bio-filters
capable of removing nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater
by immobilizing algae within the beads.
